Bad smell in the car – what you can do
A bad smell in the car can have many causes. Some you can deal with yourself, others are a job for a garage. Here are the most common sources, what you can do yourself, and what interior car cleaning covers – and does not cover.
Where does the smell come from?
- Spills of food, drinks or milk in the seats, carpets and mats.
- Forgotten rubbish under the seats, in the door pockets or in the boot.
- Moisture from wet mats, rain gear or snow carried in.
- Animals travelling in the car.
What you can do yourself
- Find the source: look under the seats, in the door pockets and in the boot.
- Remove rubbish and wipe up spills as soon as possible.
- Take wet mats out and let them dry before you put them back.
- Air the car and vacuum the seats, carpets and mats.
When should the car go to a garage?
If it smells of petrol, diesel, exhaust or burning, have the car checked at a garage. That is not a cleaning job.
